Galerie Materiel
Founded in 2021, Galerie Materiel is dedicated to two parallel and mutually illuminating programs: the art of Soviet-era nonconformism — the unofficial, underground movements that developed outside the sanctioned aesthetics of Socialist Realism — and a curated program of contemporary artists working today. Situated on the Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in the heart of Paris's historic gallery district, Materiel treats the two programs as continuous, not parallel by convenience: work made in defiance of official culture in the mid-to-late twentieth century, and work being made now, share a common commitment to art as an act of independent thought.
The gallery's public debut took place in 2022 with Influences of Time: Art of the XX Century in Pursuit of Freedom and Enlightenment, a curated exhibition at Colnaghi Gallery, New York. Structured as a four-act art play and framed through Heinrich Wölfflin's "history of art without names," the exhibition traced the transboundary currents of twentieth-century modernism — from Toulouse-Lautrec and the Dadaists through Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, and the threshold of Russian non-objectivity — establishing the curatorial method that continues to inform the gallery's program: reading individual works as nodes within larger historical and geopolitical currents, rather than as isolated objects.
Since 2023, Materiel has extended its program through participation in Art Miami and Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, presenting Russian avant-garde and nonconformist works alongside contemporary artists before an international audience of collectors.
Galerie Materiel welcomes collectors, scholars, and institutions by appointment.
